Dart Foundation Gives $10,000 for Home Heating Assistance
by Claudia Deschaine
LANSING, MI – A committee made up of hourly employees from Dart Container Corporation’s Cup Plant in Mason, Michigan has recommended a grant of $10,000 to Capital Area Community Services to go toward helping families whose heat has been shut off.
Due to the economic downturn, record numbers of local residents have been unable to pay their heating bills and have had their natural gas shut off by the utility companies. Through the summer, these homes are able to do without hot water, dryers or stoves that may be powered by natural gas. However, when cold weather begins, these families cannot survive without heat. One hundred percent of this grant goes toward paying reconnect fees and negotiated payment plans. Capital Area Community Services takes no administrative costs. The grant will be divided between Ingham and Eaton Counties.
The employees of the Mason Cup Plant deliberated at length about how to best help their community. This is the second time in the last year that the employees at the Mason Cup Plant have recommended a large grant toward this purpose. They have also asked that the Dart Foundation make grants toward food banks and meal programs.

Randy Rauch, Director of the Ingham County Department of Human Services said: "This type of generosity by individuals to help their community is outstanding. This is why this is such a great community."
Randy Bell, Director of Ingham County MSU Extension and Chair of the Power of We Consortium’s Investors Steering Committee, said: "Please relay our appreciation to the fine men and women of the Mason Cup Plant for stepping up and helping to meet one of our community's most pressing challenges. Neighbors helping neighbors reflects positively on us all."
