Promising Young Scientists Present Research
Regional Science, Engineering and Technology Fair at Fairgrounds
by Sarasota County Schools
SARASOTA, FL – Not waiting for another Sputnik to spur them into action, teachers from Kindergarten through 12th grade are sending hundreds of their students’ science and engineering projects into open competition this week at the county fairgrounds.
Members of the media are invited to join a dedicated corps of adult volunteers as they judge the 2010 Sarasota Regional Science, Engineering and Technology Fair at Robarts Arena, 3000 Ringling Boulevard, Sarasota.
Sarasota County Schools, in partnership with the Education Foundation of Sarasota County and the Sarasota County Fair Association, present the science fair each year. It is the culminating experience for Sarasota County public school, private school, and home-schooled students who have researched and developed comprehensive scientific or technological projects utilizing the scientific method. First-place projects will be on public display during the Sarasota County Fair in March.
The projects will be evaluated by dozens of volunteer judges from the fields of medicine, engineering, academia, research and technology. Subject areas include behavioral and social sciences, biochemistry, botany, chemistry, computer science, earth science, engineering, space science, mathematics, medicine and health, physics and zoology. Susan Puchalla, K-12 Science and Health Specialist for the school district, has directed the fair for the past ten years.
The Dart Foundation Award in Medicine and Health...will be presented at the awards ceremony for all grade levels....
High school students are competing for prestigious scholarships and awards and the opportunity to participate in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair. Every spring, the Education Foundation sends a group of high-achieving student scientists to the fair to represent Sarasota County and compete for international recognition. In 2010, the Intel ISEF will take place in San Jose, CA, from May 9–14.
Local sponsors support the Sarasota RSET Fair at various levels. New this year as DaVinci Sponsor is The Faulhaber Foundation, Inc. Einstein Sponsor is the Dart Foundation. The Sagan Sponsor is the Sarasota-Manatee Area Manufacturing Association. Major scholarship awards underwritten by sponsors are presented to outstanding high school science fair participants. The Dart Foundation Award in Medicine and Health and the Omar Y. Cooper Student Achievement Award will be presented at the awards ceremony for all grade levels on April 15, 2010 in the School Board chambers, 1980 Landings Boulevard, Sarasota.
